Abstract
A cement of the Portland cement type is made by mixing and grinding two clinkers made by sintering calcareous and argillaceous or siliceous materials, the first clinker containing a high percentage, 30 to 75 per cent of tri-calcium silicate and substantially no free lime, and the second containing chemically active uncombined silica, calcium alumina di-silicate and mono-calcium silicate. The two clinkers are preferably mixed in such proportions that the free silica provided by the second clinker is sufficient to combine with all the lime liberated from the tri-calcium silicate of the first clinker on hydration of the cement. The first clinker is fired at a temperature of 1350-1650 DEG C. and the second at a temperature of 700-1200 DEG C. In an example, a first clinker having a tri-calcium content of 60 per cent is mixed in equal proportions with a second clinker containing 16 per cent of chemically active silica.
