Abstract

Mucin is mechanically separated continuously from the fibrous material in mechanical wood pulp or similar fibre-containing mixtures by a screen having a number of zones which are impervious to the mucin and in which the <PICT:0447260/IV/1> washed stuff is thinned down by fluid under pressure sprayed upon it and which is removed from the screen by a rotary stirring member. A screen 15 of wire gauze fabric is secured to a supporting frame which may be composed of bars carried by a radial arrangement of axial ribs. A number of impervious zones constructed as ring-shaped troughs or gutters 17 convex towards the outside are formed in the screen and into these spray tubes 16 deliver diluting water. The spacing between the gutters 17 may decrease towards the outlet end 14 of the casing 10a to increase the intensity of the washing action. If desired, the ring space of the screen containing mucin in different degrees of concentration may be divided into separate zones by partitions extending to the outer wall each with a separate outlet for collecting mucin in desired degrees of concentration. The blades 27 of the rotary stirrer may be made hollow and may be constructed as spray devices extending in a longitudinal direction close to the screen. The rotor may, alternatively, be of wave form or be eccentrically mounted on its shaft 11. In a modification, the screen is made to revolve. The fibres in the gutters or channels 17 may be washed out by water from outside the screen 15.
