Abstract

447,205. Diaphragms. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA, 30, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 29, 1934, No. 34342. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1933. [Class 40 iv] Sound reproducing or recording devices are provided with means for producing " turbulence damping," i.e. the damping produced by causing a turbulent motion in a fluid such as air. Such damping is proportional to the cube of the air velocity and so, in the neighbourhood of the resonance frequency of the instrument concerned, reduces the response to high level vibrations to a much greater extent than that to low level vibrations. The Figure shows an instrument in which a mirror is controlled by a diaphragm 20 for making an optical record. The space behind the diaphragm is, in order to produce " turbulence damping," closed by a thin perforated sheet 25. A similar instrument not forming part of the invention has a comparatively thick porous back instead of the sheet 25. This arrangement gives an approximation to viscous damping. Reference is made to a cutter in which the response at the upper and lower ends of the spectrum depends primarily on mass and stiffness respectively and in the region 2000 ... 4000 depends on turbulence damping. No constructional details are given.
