Abstract
446,895. Making upholstery springs. PASS, H. C., 1989, Queen Street East, Toronto, Canada. Oct. 1, 1934, No. 28016. [Class 83 (iv)] In a coiling-machine for producing upholstery springs with radially inturned ends the wire is fed between rolls 17, 28 which can be separated at predetermined intervals by a cam to interrupt the feed. A guide sleeve 80 presents the wire to a grooved roller 56 which curves it downwardly to form the spring the diameter of which is determined bv the vertical adjustment of the roller in respect to the guide sleeve and by the base diameter of a replaceable cam 39 which moves the roller towards the sleeve when the spring ends are to be bent. This cam is driven by skew gearing from a longitudinal shaft 30 driven by skew gear on a transverse shaft 10 operated by a motor 24 and the shaft 30 carries cams 33, 34 which swing the arm 54 carrying the roller 56 outwardly to determine the pitch of the spring and move it vertically to bend the ends after the roller has been advanced towards the sleeve 80. A third cam 32 operates a knife 73 to sever the completed spring. Adjustable sectors can be secured to the cams 33, 34 and to the cam which separates the feed rolls to produce springs of varying shapes.
