Abstract

446,760. Manual weaving and winding apparatus. THACKERAY, M. L., Elsing Hall, Dereham, Norfolk. Nov. 6, 1934, No. 31850. [Classes 120 (ii), 142 (ii), and 142 (iv)] A wooden metal or other readily dissemblable hand weaving frame, Fig. 1, adapted to receive treadle weaving apparatus, Fig. 5, comprises square or other side bars 1 threaded to receive adjustable transverse bars 2a, 3a, and having holes 5 to receive pins 5a on a supporting frame 7. A bobbin 12 on which the weft to be inserted is wound is fitted in a cup-ended screw 13 and in a cup 11 on the spindle of a pinion, which is driven by a pinion 8 having a driving crank 9. The bars 1 support a treadle frame furnished with oscillatable plates 16, 17 carrying rods 18, which each support a heald formed by making loops in a length of string. The size of the warp may be increased by adaptors engaging apertures 3c. A comb or reed 24 with a removable top 24a is slidable on the bars 1, and may be secured thereto by metal clips 50, Fig. 4. The treadle apparatus Fig. 5, has channel blocks 27 to fit over the bars 1, pins 27a being passed under the blocks. The treadles 29 are controlled by springs 44 and connected by cords 31b, 31a 31 to yokes 30 carrying treadle rods 28. A metal card or wood indicator to indicate the order in which the treadles are to be raised comprises spaced discs 52, Fig. 8, integral with flat pieces 53 formed into a clamp 54 for engagement with a member such as 24a. Fig. 1. A disc rotatable by teeth 55 bears numerals selectively exposed through an aperture 56. To facilitate pattern weaving without the treadle attachment, the treadle rods 18 and other auxiliary rods are placed in succession on a rocker device having uprights 47, Fig. 6, supported by rounded base parts 49 on the side pieces of the weaving frame. The frame is rocked to form the sheds. The weaving frame may rest at one end on the operator's knees, or, it may be supported adjustably at such end by uprights. It may have adjustable legs, or short legs for use in bed and may be packed in a small case after being dissembled. The weaving frame may be placed on a warping frame 18, Fig. 3 and be rotated thereon so that the warp is wound on the bars 2a, 3a. When warping, the threads are passed under and over rods of varying length of a warp threader or leasing device and are thus kept separated. The rods are fixed in apertures in a cross-bar carried by channelled blocks, which can be fitted over the bars 1. The weaving is effected as described in Specification 252,984, [Class 142 (ii)]. A skein of wool carried by adjustable spools 60 on a support 59 on a base bar 57, which can be clamped to a table or to the weaving frame, is wound on a bobbin 67 supported by a slidable end bearing 66 and a socket 68 rotated by friction or other gearing 71, 72. According to the Provisional Specification, an attachment to form a tray, table, writing board or reading stand may be used with the weaving frame which may be supported by triangular frames or uprights with feet and may rotate on a metal rod. The oscillating plates of the treadle frame may be looked by rods passing through the uprights or be notched to receive a retaining pawl, &c.
