Abstract
Active carbon in granular form is obtained by impregnating finely divided carbonaceous materials with suitable chemical reagents, e.g. zinc chloride or a mixture of zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid, then subjecting the wet mixture to a second grinding operation to form a plastic homogeneous paste which is then formed into pieces of suitable size and shape, dried and carbonized. Moderate heating, e.g. up to 100--110 DEG C., may be applied during the second grinding operation, depending upon the hardness of the materials treated, to facilitate the impregnation and the formation of a plastic paste. Mixtures of carbonaceous substances may be treated, being previously ground together or p separately. Suitable grains may be obtained by spreading the paste on a flat plate and drying, whereupon it shrinks and hardens and the layer may be readily detached from the plate and broken up into irregular pieces; by filling suitable cavities, e.g. holes or grooves, &c., in a flat plate with the paste; or by extruding the paste through a perforated plate, and forming the extruded paste into grains. Preferably the air contained in the paste is removed by exhaustion. The grains are dried by a steady increase in temperature up to 200 DEG C., and then calcined at 700--720 DEG C.
