Convention date, Nov. 10, 1933. [Class 87 (ii)] A lever system 6 ... 10 for operating the head 3 is actuated by toothed segments 11, 12 with profiles comprising both convex and concave portions such that the die moves rapidly down to the work, moves into contact therewith at a slower speed without undue impact, and then moves at a speed corresponding to the rate of softening or yielding and final hardening of the resin. The press may be driven by hand or power. A lower guide 2 for the head 3 is adjustable vertically to suit the work, and the frame of the machine is strengthened by bars 32. As shown in Fig. 1, the head 3 is connected to the lever 6 by a screwed rod 5 adjustable in a nut 4 and secured by a lock-nut. The lever system 6 ... 10 is arranged to give slow movement of the die at the limit of the down stroke. The press is actuated by a double hand lever mounted directly on the shaft 13. The hand lever comprises a shorter lever 14 for quick movements without load and a longer lever 15 for applying power. In a modification, Fig. 3, the press is provided with a hand lever 16 and a motor 26 for alternative use, both operating a pulley 19 loose on the shaft 13. This pulley drives the shaft 13 by means of a rope or chain 21 and a pulley (not shown), keyed to the shaft. The rope 21 passes over a pulley 22 mounted on a pivoted lever 23 connected to a spring 20. During the latter part of the operative movement of the lever 16 or pulley 19 the resistance to the die causes movement of the lever 23 extending the spring, and the final movement of the die is effected by the return movement of the lever 23 effected by the spring, whilst the lever 16 is locked by a catch 24. The final pressure is regulated by adjusting the anchorage of the spring against a scale 25. The return of the die is ensured by a lug 30 on the wheel 19 engaging an arm 18 on the shaft 13. The motor 26 drives the pulley 19 through reversing gearing which provides a higher speed for the return stroke. A clutch is provided on the motor shaft.
