445,472. Obtaining krypton and xenon. GROVES, W. W., 30, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany) Oct. 9, 1934, No. 28880. [Class 8 (ii)] To obtain krypton and xenon, liquid oxygen from atmospheric air is subjected to several successive rectifications in columns arranged one above another, or side by side. The Figure shows apparatus in which air is rectified in the upper column 1 and oxygen passes down to the column 3 through a cock 2 while oxygen vapour passes back to the upper column through a cock 4. The liquid passes down through cock 5 to column 6, gas rising through the same cock. The liquid finally flows into the interior of a double coil 7 and is withdrawn through a cock 9 ; it consists of a mixture of krypton and xenon contaminated by oxygen and may be treated to obtain pure krypton and xenon. Compressed air passes through the outer coil 10 and through the evaporating coils of the columns 1, 3 in succession, the liquefied air being delivered into the column 1. In a modification, liquid oxygen is delivered into a column in which the evaporating coil is traversed by compressed nitrogen afterwards expanded and delivered to cool the condenser at the top of the column ; the liquid from this column flows to a second column provided in duplicate with jacketed evaporating coils, the liquid passing out through the inner coils and compressed air for evaporation through the outer coils. When one of the inner coils becomes coated with liquid, this coil and its outer coil may be shut off and hot air passed through the outer coil, the inner coil being finally scavenged by opening auxiliary cocks.
