Abstract

<PICT:0444931/III/1> The interior surfaces of metal tanks for the storing or transporting of petroleum oils or distillates are preserved from corrosion by directing upon them an impact pressure jet of a coating mixture consisting of a water suspension, of creamy consistency and substantially free from any organic binding agent, of one or more members of the group consisting of the hydrates and carbonates of alkaline earth metals. A preferable coating mixture consists of lime slaked in sea water. This coating, when desired, can be readily removed by means of a high pressure jet of hot salt water. When a specially resistant coating is required, the lime coating may be washed over with a solution of sodium silicate, thus producing an insoluble coating of calcium silicate. A suitable apparatus for applying the coating mixture comprises a pump D operated by an air motor F and elevating the mixture from the bottom 2 of the tank B to jets 42 which are rotated, by an air motor C, about vertical and horizontal axes 20 so that the mixture is applied to the whole surface.
