Abstract

444,606. Motor vehicles. ROESCH, G. H., and TALBOT, Ltd., C., Barlby Road, Ladbroke Grove, London. Jan. 17, 1935, No. 1661. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), 79 (iv), and 79 (v)] [See also Group XXXII] In motor vehicles of the type wherein a main tubular frame member extends from the engine to the rear axle, enclosing the driving shaft which is located in the upper part of the tube, the variable speed gear box forms a continuation of the tubular frame member, being disposed either beneath a seat or to the rear of the body space so as not to encroach upon the floor space. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the tubular frame member 10 is secured at the front end in a socket member 11 on the engine casing 12 and at the rear end is attached to the gear box 15 integral with or bolted to the differential casing 14. Resilient packing may be provided in the connections to avoid the transmission of vibrations. Frame cross members 17, 18, secured to the socket member 11 and rear end of the tubular member 10, respectively, extend beyond the wheels and are connected by longitudinal members 19. An auxiliary body support 32 is attached by a bracket 35 to the differential casing. The front wheels are independently mounted directly on the engine casing. The rear wheels, driven through articulated half axles 16, are independently mounted on the cross frame member 18 each being carried by an arm 20 integral with a torsion rod 21 supported in a bearing 23 and fixed at its end 22 to the cross member. The tubular member 10 is of substantial size and disposed as low as possible in relation to the driving shaft 28. It may be formed with one or more reservoirs 63 with orifices 39, 60 and may house the exhaust pipe and gear and brake control rods 61, 62. The control levers 30 are mounted on an arm or shaft carried by the socket member 11. In a modification, the gear case is on the rear side of the differential. In a preferred form, Fig. 6, the gear box 15 is arranged under the front seat, the tubular member being formed in sections 51, 52 fitted in sockets 53, 54 on the gear box. The rear axle is of orthodox design, the casing 56 being rigid with the differential and supported by springs. An articulated extension of the shaft 28 passes to the differential through a casing 57 jointed to the end of the tubular member 52 or to the cross member 18 so as to allow rise and fall of the axle.
