Abstract
444,450. Automatic control of strip tension. KRUPP GRUSONWERK AKT.- GES., F., Buckau, Magdeburg, Germany. June 17, 1935, No. 17427. Convention date, Aug. 25, 1934. [Class 38 (iv)] The winding drum of a machine for winding strip material is driven by an electric motor, the field of which is in series with a resistance which is placed out of circuit, when the tension of the material increases, by a contact device arranged in the feed path of the material and actuated thereby while additional resistances also arranged in series with the field of the motor are successively placed out of circuit by a regulator controlled by the roll of material as it is being wound so that the speed of the motor, and thus of the drum, is reduced as the roll increases in diameter. As shown, the field of the electric motor 30 driving the winding drum 1 is connected through a line 35 and a line 40, resistances 32, 36 .. 39, and a line 29 with the starter and the line 29 and a line 31, connected between the resistances 32, 36, are connected to contacts 27, 28 co-operating with a bridge 26 on the armature 25 of a coil 23 which is connected to the mains line 24 and by the line 19 with a pivoted contact device 20 co-operating with a contact 21 connected to the other mains line 22. The device 20 is carried by a pivoted lever 16 carrying a roller 15 supported by the material passing along the feed path 14 and when the tension in the material increases the contact 20 engages the contact 21 and the armature 25 is drawn up to close the contacts 27, 28 and cut the resistance 32 out of the field of the motor which consequently decreases in speed; should the material run slack in the path 14, the contacts are disengaged and the resistance 32 put into the field of the motor to increase its speed and take up the slack. The lines between the resistances 32, 36 ; 36, 37 ; 37, 38 ; 38, 39 and between the resistance 39 and the line 40 are respectively connected to contacts 34, 46 .. 49 which co-operate with annular contacts 41 .. 45 on an insulated drum 12 geared to a sector 10 on the axis of rotation 9 of a lever 8 connected to a lever 4 of one of a series of rollers 2 bearing upon the material being wound on the drum 1. The lever 4 is pivoted on an axis 5 and as the roll of material on the drum increases in diameter, the drum 12 is rotated to cause the pairs of contacts 34, 41 ; 46,42; 47,43; 48, 44 and 49, 45 to become successively engaged and thus successively cut out the resistances 36 .. 39 from the field of the motor and so reduce the speed thereof and of the drum 1 according to the increase in the diameter of the roll. The rollers 2 and arcshaped plates 3 guide the material on the drum and yield as the roll increases in diameter.
