Abstract
444,445. Making electric switches. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. May 3, 1935, No. 13299. Convention date, May 3, 1934. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Casting.-A switch contact of sintered tungsten or other difficultly-fusible metal powder impregnated with copper, silver or other easily fusible metal is made by filling a mould with the tungsten powder, sintering, preferably in vacuo, providing a gap in the mould and pouring the copper into the evacuated mould to fill the pores in the sintered block and said gap. The gap may be provided by removing a block of molybdenum or other material not affected by sintering temperature or by replacing a flat cover by one with a recess. The recessed cover may have surfaces to engage and hold the sintered block. To facilitate evacuating and reduce cost, a long mould may be used to cast a rod having the same crosssection as the contacts required and this is then cut up and ground. Any copper on other faces may be ground off at the same time. The tungsten powder may be mixed with a solution of camphor or other easily evaporated material so that fine-grain powder may be used or more of the fusible metal be absorbed or both to facilitate cutting up by a metal saw. Contacts made in this way can be easily soldered to their supports.
