443,809. Malking rubber threads. GAMMETER, J. R., 680, Portage Path, Akron, Ohio, U.S.A. March 20, 1935, No. 8748. [Class 70] Rubber threads are made by separating a continuously moving strip of rubber into threads by the progressive application of localized heat and pressure. A metal belt 19 carries two strips 20 (produced by deposition or other methods) between two hollow rotating mandrels 17, 18 where they are cut into threads by annular spaced knives 48 carried by the mandrels. The mandrels may be heated by steam, electricity, or, as shown, by gas from the interior. A temperature of 200 to 300‹ F. and a pressure of 2¥ to 3 pounds per knife is usually sufficient. The belt 19 and the mandrels have a common drive, and the belt speed equals the peripheral speed of the knives. To prevent sticking together of the threads the strips or threads may be dusted with talc, or coagulant may be applied to the strips by rollers 61. For the same purpose and to prevent sticking between the knives and ensure sticking to the belt, endless wires 96, 104 travel with the belt and pass between the knives. The ends of the mandrels are supported by straps in frames 24, 66, and rotate in contact with ball-bearing rollers 25. The positions of the frames 24, 66 are adjustable, e.g. frame 66 66 may be pushed toward frame 24 by a poweroperated piston 84 acting on a rod 75 pivoted at 81. The mandrels are cleaned by metal brushes 33.
