Abstract
443,395. Machines for working land. FOWLER & CO. (LEEDS), Ltd., J., and BIRRELL, E., Steam Plough & Locomotive Works, Leeds. Feb. 7, 1935, No. 3995. [Class 6 (i)] In rotary tilling-machines in which the tilling-tools are secured on rings mounted to rotate about axes inclined to the vertical and sweep through the soil in cycloidal paths with the rear part of the sweep at a lower depth than the front part, the stem of each tool carries a share and a separate deflecting plate secured above the share and forming a continuation of it, the share and plate projecting beyond the sides of the stem. The wide upper part of each tool stem a has two webs a<3>, a<4> adapted, respectively, to bear against the outside and inside of the ring b and provided with offsets or stops a<5>, a<6> to fit against the underside of. the ring to relieve the fastening bolts c of upward forces. The stems are cranked outwards as shown so that there may be no undercutting at the greatest depth of work. A tapered plug a<2> at the lower end of the stem may be inclined forward and the share d may have a tapered socket which fits on any one of the plugs, being secured by a wooden peg. The share may be slightly curved so that its lower end is advanced. This end edge may be dihedral, or it may be straight and either at right angles to the side edges or inclined to right or left. The lateral edges may be in planes tangent to cylinders co-axial with the ring. A share may be in two parts d<6>, d<10>, Fig. 18, connected to one another by tongue-and-socket and a wooden peg, the upper part being fastened to the stem by a bolt or stud d'. The deflecting plate f fits any stem and is secured by bolts or studs f<1>. It may be formed with two oppositely inclined faces f<2> or with a face swept to the right or left. Specifications 103,302, [Class 6 (i)], and 393,827 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the deflecting plate may comprise a base plate, a curved deflecting lip, and a web.
