Abstract
443,240. Igniting gas burners. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., and DENSHAM, A. B., 84, Horseferry Road, Westminster. Aug. 24, 1934, No. 24460. [Class 75 (iii)] The conduit 12 carrying a hot-plate burner 10, Fig. 1, is provided with a removable auxiliary jet 15 having a lateral orifice for directing gaseous mixture into an open-ended chamber 17, formed from a material of low thermal conductivity and containing a catalytic igniter. On ignition, the flame strikes back to the jet 15, curls upwardly and ignites the burner jets 11. The igniter comprises a blob of platinum black on a porous pellet 22 suspended by platinum wires 23 in a frame 20 mounted removably in lateral grooves in the side walls of the chamber 17. The latter rests on the flat top 13 of the conduit 12 below a hot plate. Dimensions of the chamber are given. A wall 21 is provided on either side of the jet and chamber to minimize the effects of draughts. In a gas-fire, the burner pipe 24, Fig. 5, is provided with an upstanding pipe 27 carrying a head 28 provided with radially disposed outlets 29, 30 below a flange, the outlets 29 being directed towards the catalyst chamber 17. On ignition, the flames strike back to the outlets 29 and ignite the jet issuing from the outlet 30 which in turn ignites the main jets 31. The Provisional Specification states also that the chamber may be formed from a refractory brick having a recess on the underface.
