Abstract

443,098. Knitting. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, and BOALER, W. H., c/o British Celanese, Ltd., Spondon, near Derby. Aug. 15, 1934, No. 23488. [Class 74 (ii)] A circular knitting - machine for producing non-laddering fabric as shown in Fig. 6, is provided with a series of transfer points, which are caused to enter, in succession, loops which have been drawn down by the needles, and stretch them over the heads of adjacent needles, before these adjacent needles are caused to rise again. Transfer points 48 which may have loop-holding notches 111, are mounted in a point cylinder 49 pivoted eccentrically with respect to the needle cylinder, and are lowered by point cams 61, acting on butts 60, to cause them to enter the loops drawn by the needles. The point cylinder rotates in the same direction as, and with a peripheral speed somewhat greater than, the needle cylinder, and when each point has overtaken its needle to the extent of 1¢ needle spaces, it has (by reason of the smaller diameter and eccentricity of the point cylinder, or under the action of a cam 80) moved out to a position between two needles instead of behind them. The needles now rise to pass through the stretched-out loops, so that each loop lies around two adjacent needles. The transfer points are now raised out of the loops by the point cams. Thus, in the next course, each needle draws one loop through two old loops. Fig. 22 shows the path taken by the transfer points when operated by the cam 80. The points rock on a curved edge 83 of their butts 60. A clutch 39, carried by a rod 40, may engage with either of gears 35, 38, to drive the machine in either direction. Movement of the rod 40 to the left, as when starting reciprocatory knitting, actuates a rod 95. This first operates to lift the transfer point depressor cam, and then, after an interval, (determined by a lost motion device), so that any points already depressed will be raised, the whole transfer point assembly is rocked towards the centre of the needle cylinder, about bearings 91, so removing the points from the needles. By rendering the transfer points inoperative, horizontal stripes may be produced. Certain transfer points may be omitted or rendered inoperative (e.g. by selective patterning mechanism) to produce a recurring pattern, in which case at least one loop in every wale should be transferred in each pattern repeat. The spacing of the transfer points may be greater than that of the needles, to produce a more open fabric. The loop transfer may be to preceding adjacent needles, the peripheral speed of the point cylinder being less than that of the needle cylinder. In the Provisional Specification, yarn feeders, and associated point cylinders, are said to rotate bodily around the needle cylinder of a multi-feeder machine.
