Abstract

443,013. Harvesting maize. CARPINETI, A., 3250, Calle Independencia, Buenos Aires. May 14, 1934, No. 14510. Convention date, May 26, 1933. [Classes 6 (iii) and 58] The screw-threaded picking .rollers 127 ... 130 of a maize harvester are arranged horizontally close to the ground and gathering chains or like devices carrying tines extend downwardly and forwardly from the picker rollers so that their tines engage the stems at the ground level. The rollers with their associated mechanism are carried by a frame 10 extending forwardly of a tractor frame 2 to which it is adjustably secured by a pivot 4. A spring 16 and turn buckles 12 between the tractor frame and the rear of the front frame 10 give a resilient and adjustable angular connection between the two frames : the forward end of the front frame is also supported by a ground wheel 181 the height of which can be adjusted. Each picking roller comprises a forward coned portion 133 with wide spaced screw threads the edges of which lie on the continuations of the boundary lines 141 ... 144 of dividers 149, 150, 151, a middle portion 134 with lenticular depressions on the threads and a plain screw threaded portion 139. The inclined gathering chains 75, 76, 77, 78 are provided with overlapping tines 83 which lift fallen stems and direct the crop to the picking rollers. An endless belt 154 is arranged above the end of the picking rollers and carries V-shaped members 155 which push the ears along a slope 161 on to a conveyer 162 that carries them to thrashing mechanism mounted on the tractor frame. The picking rollers, gathering chains, pushing belt, conveyer 162 and a pair of obliquely arranged, intermeshing spider gathering devices 36, 37 are all driven from a power shaft 22 connected to the tractor power shaft by a universal coupling. The thrashing mechanism and its associated devices are driven from an auxiliary motor 186 carried by a supplementary frame on the tractor frame. The ears fall from the conveyer 162 into a hopper 165 whence they pass to a rotary cage 193 where the grain is loosened falling down a slope 196 to sieves 197, 198 hung by chains 200 and reciprocated by an eccentric 203. A fan 213 directs blasts of air across the sieves. The separated grain falls into the boot of an elevator 218 whence it is carried to a shoot 225 for bagging. The upper end of the rigid framework 229 of the conveyer 162 carries depending chains 233 connected to a lever 234 adapted to be moved by a pneumatic jack 237 actuated through a pump 238 operated by the attendant. By operating the pump to draw the chains downward the entire front frame is raised about the pivot 4 clear of the ground : the frame is lowered by opening the release valve of the jack.
