Abstract
442,933. Dental appliances. BOYLE, H. H., 81, Walters Road, Swansea. March 4, 1935, Nos. 6682 and 12574. [Class 81 (ii)] A template for use in forming and mounting occlusion models and for setting up arti. ficial teeth, and also adapted for use in form. ing models for plugging bleeding lesions and with certain modifications for the production of splints for fractured jaws is formed to correspond in plan with the outline of the tooth carrying ridge of a jaw and has a flange 11 or 22 extending towards the palate or tongue respectively, and an occlusion surface 13 or 21, facing towards the teeth of the jaw in question, which is curved to conform approximately to curves defined by the incisal edges and cusp ends of a set of teeth as viewed in front and side elevation and also sloped as viewed in cross section to correspond with the slope of the incisal edges and cusp ends of the teeth. The templates are formed with concentric inner and outer boundaries 14, 16 and 23, 25 in front and rearwardly extending portions 15 and 24. The desired curvature of the occlusion surfaces may be attained approximately by forming them to a spherical or ellipsoidal curvature conveniently by the use of a former of the required shape. As shown in Fig. 10 such a former has an ellipsoidal portion 30, to which the anterior part of a template is shaped, and a spherical portion 31 to which the posterior part is shaped. The templates are marked with lines 41, 42, 43 parallel to the outer edge of the template and radial lines 46, 46, 47 for use in positioning teeth of various sizes in jaws of different dimensions. The constructions shown in Figs. 1-4 are suitable for an edentulous mouth, in the case of a mouth the front teeth of which are present an opening corresponding to the position of these may be formed between the anterior edge and the flange. The use of the templates for forming bite blocks and setting up teeth is described in detail in the Specification. The modified construction shown in Fig. 8 is suitable for use in preparing a splint for a fractured jaw, a model being first prepared with the aid of the template and the completed splint secured to the template by ligatures passing through the slots 52 and around the splint proper. Templates marked as described may also be used as gauges for noting progress in orthodontic work.
