[Classes 79 (iii) and 136 (i)] [See also Group XXXII and XXXIV] Vibration or shock-absorbing devices for connecting two members or parts together, for example, for securing radiators, engines, and mudguards on vehicles, comprise a block of rubber or the like having convex or converging portions engaging concave or inwardlyconverging cups or recesses formed on or in the members or parts so that strains are taken by the block in shear, a bolt or the like being passed through the device to secure the parts. As shown in Fig. 2, a vehicle radiator 20 is secured to each chassis sidemember 21 by means of a rubber &c. ball 22 mounted between opposed cups 23 formed respectively in a bracket 25 on the member 21 and in the sheet-metal side wall of the radiator shell, a bolt 24 securing the parts. At its upper end. the radiator is secured by a similar resilient device to a rearwardly-extending stayrod. In a second application a rear mudguard is shown secured to the vehicle body and a front mudguard to a chassis side-member and to a footboard by a number of such resilient devices. Figs. 9, 10 show a cycle-type mudguard and valance for an independently-sprung vehicle wheel which is carried on a stub-axle 48 secured on one end of a wheel arm 49 mounted upon an axle 50 spring-connected to the vehicle body. The attachment portion 52 of the mudguard 51, as shown in Fig. 9, has a number of the resilient devices 22, 23, 24 connecting it to the wheel arm 49 while the semicircular valance 54, Fig. 10, is connected to the end of the fixed stub-axle 48 by a single connection comprising a rubber ball 22 clamped by a bolt 64 between a valance recess 63 and a cup 62 screwed to the axle, one end of the bolt being fixed to the axle while the other end has an adjusting lock-nut. In a modification, the cup 62 is supported from a rotating. axle by being mounted on the inner race of a ballbearing. A peripheral groove 55 on the valance engages the beaded edge 56 of the mudguard through which passes a stiffening wire 58 projecting from the ends of the bead for connection to screw-threaded rods 59 adapted to pass through sleeves on the valance which is secured by clamping nuts on the rods 59.
