[Class 108 (i)] In a vehicle for transporting material such as refuse, the vehicle is loaded at the rear and the refuse &c. drops by gravity in front of the rear panel to which is imparted movements of small amplitude so that the refuse is progressively distributed and compressed within the body as the loading takes place. Figs. 1 and 3 show two modifications of the method of filling and packing the refuse into the body 1. The rear panel 2 is provided with an upper opening bc through which the bin discharges its contents which fall by gravity in front of the panel 2 as represented by 5. The panel is then swung inwardly compressing the refuse as shown in Fig. 2 and the panel withdrawn to enable a subsequent bin loading to be discharged into the body. The rear panel 2 may be provided with a box-like portion 7 serving as the compacting device in which case the panel is provided with lateral wings 8 serving to form continuations of the body side walls when the panel is retracted. Figs. 7 and 8 show a vehicle in which the rear panel 2 is provided with the portion 7 and also with a chamber 9 serving to house and guide the bin 17. The bin is elevated by a cable 19 passing over pulleys 21, 22 to a hydraulic jack 27 and the bin is shown at 17<1> in its tipping position. The compacting movement of the panel 2 and portion 7 is performed by hydraulic jacks 10 removably linked to the panel at 16. When the contents are to be dumped the rear panel 2 with its chamber 9 is moved to the rear out of the way and the contents are discharged by means of a partition and movable floor or by tipping the vehicle about a rear pivot 29. The rear panel is moved out of the way by detaching link 14 from the panel 2 and operating a sector or sectors 29<a> by means of cables 30 from a jack 33, the sectors either being rigid with the box or chamber 9, or provided with a stop 34 adapted to engage a stop 35 on the box 9. Fig. 13 shows a body 1 having a curved depression at the rear end to enable the loading height of the panel aperture b<1> c<1> to be lowered and in this case a flap 401 is adapted to be raised by cables either manually or automatically during compacting to increase the effective area of the panel. Various forms of screens or gratings are described to aid the holding back of the compacted mass when the panel is withdrawn to receive another bin load. Fig. 18 shows such a screen 53 comprising bars and mounted thereon are prongs 59 which during the movements of the panel 2 are projected and retracted by means of a cable 67 operating in conjunction with a sector 68 and spring controlled levers 62. Stops 55, which may be retractable either by hand or automatically are provided to limit the movements of the screen 53.
