441,416. Ground augers. HARGREAVES & CO., Ltd., W., Old Road, Cheadle, and HARGREAVES, W., Glendaruel, Thorley Lane, Timperley, both in Cheshire. Sept. 15, 1934, No. 26515. [Class 85] [See also Group I] A tool or implement for piercing and aerating turf &c. comprises one or more tines or prongs so shaped and supported that during insertion into the ground they rotate themselves automatically, whilst during withdrawal they are locked against rotation and therefore withdraw material from the ground. The fork shown in Fig. 1 comprises a tine holder made in two parts a, t clamped together by bolts c and carrying a handle frame d. The tines consist of taperec drills e fitting into sockets a<1> against balls f. When the tines are withdrawn from the ground they first move axially in their sockets so that projections or pins e<1> engage abutments or slots b<2> in the lower part b of the holder, thus looking the tines against rotation. The balls f may be dispensed with. The tines may be mounted on a hand or power operated wheeled machine, being inserted into and withdrawn from the ground by a rocking beam driven by crank mechanism and gearing. According to the Provisional Specification, the tines may be roughened or provided with small projections to assist in withdrawing soil as they rise from the ground.
