440,066. Honing cylinders. MICROMATIC HONE CORPORATION, 7401, Dubois Street, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Connor, K. W.) Jan. 8, 1935, No. 672. Convention date, Jan. 8, 1934. [Class 60] A tool for honing internal cylindrical surfaces comprises a spindle 10 of hexagonal or other non-circular section having slidably mounted thereon two spiders 17 slotted to receive honing-elements 13 slotted at 14 to engage an annular element 15 secured to the spindle 10, the slots being shaped so as to allow the elements 13 to tilt. Spaced from the spiders 17 are spiders 25, and between each pair of spiders 17, 25 is a washer 22 bevelled to engage the inclined ends of the elements 13 and bored at 24 to a size allowing the washers to move laterally as the elements tilt. The lower spiders are secured together by pins 27, which pass through hollow rivets 29 uniting the upper spiders, and are secured to a nut 38 ; springs 37 hold the elements 13 against the washers 22. Rotatable on a cylindrical upper portion of the spindle 10 is an adjusting sleeve 42 screwed at 43 to engage the nut 38 and recessed to receive a spring 44 engaging the upper spider 25, the spring being rotated with the sleeve by pins 48 and engaged by spring-pressed balls 52, which prevent accidental rotation ; the elements 13 are adjusted by rotation of the sleeve 42, and the tool is driven by a member 45 on the spindle 10, whilst a guide-plate 54, to aid in the insertion of the tool in a cylinder, is provided on the lower end of the spindle. The spring 44 is formed from a hollow cylinder with offset slots 53 therein.
