Abstract

<PICT:0440023/III/1> <PICT:0440023/III/2> <PICT:0440023/III/3> Radio - active elements are generated by a neutron radiation which is emitted from a space in which a nuclear transmutation process is maintained and falls upon an element, thereby transmuting it into a radioactive element. The neutron radiation may be produced by the action of a beam of diplogen ions produced by a canal-ray tube 9, Fig. 2, and accelerated in a continuation 10 of the tube, which enter a chamber containing diplogen, a diplogen compound of lithium or other light elements. The element to be transmuted into the radio-active element is contained in a body surrounding this chamber. Elements having half-life periods exceeding 24 hours may be thus generated. The radiation may also be produced by heating up a small space 44, Fig. 4, containing diplogen, lithium hydride or other light element compound of hydrogen or diplogen by bombarding it with canal rays, for example:--a diplon beam, or with a proton or electron beam generated by the discharge of condensers 52 through the cathode ray tubes 41, and passing through metal windows to the container 44. In another form, a cathode-ray tube having a thin metal window 27 serving as the anode is excited from a 10 million volt impulse generator and the beam falls on a target 31 of lead mounted on a rotating anti-cathode 30 and water cooled through the axle 35. The X-rays generated produce neutrons in a beryllium block 52 which is surrounded by a block 34 of the element, for example iodine or arsenic, which is to be transmuted to the radio-active element. In the case, for example, of iodine the radioactive element produced is an isotope, and the element is then irradiated in the form of a compound, for example a carbon compound such as iodoform or ethyl iodide, which leaves the radio-active isotope free. A small amount of ordinary iodine may be added before or after radiation and the whole then separated so that the radio-active iodine is obtained together with the added iodine.
