[Classes 11 and 16] [See also Groups XVI and XX] A character-receiving medium comprises a sheet of material which is stretchable and contractible in one direction only so that the configuration and/or dimensions of characters, illustrations, &c. which are to be impressed, drawn, or similarly applied on the sheet and /or their relative positions thereon may be varied by elongating or contracting the sheet. The invention is particularly applicable to justifying typewritten, typeset, or drawn letters for reproduction by photographic or other processes, and the characterreceiving medium 15 comprises a flat unstretchable portion 16 and a stretchable portion 17 integral therewith and corrugated transversely so as to be stretchable or contractible longitudinally without transverse deformation of the characters. When the latter are typed on the sheet 15, which is preferably of thin paper or other translucent material, the corrugations are flattened by the impact of the keys, and stretching takes place primarily in the spaces between the letters. The sheet 15 is divided by slits 21 into line strips and the whole is preferably attached to a supporting sheet 19 by a permanently sticky adhesive so that any typed line may be justified by lifting the appropriate strip 24, stretching or contracting it to the desired length, and re-attaching it to the backing 19. An unscored strip may be left at the right-hand edge of the sheet 15 which is torn off before justification, and the slits 21 may be produced before or after printing, thin guide lines being provided on the sheets 15, 19 to assist in printing the characters in the proper position. The character-receiving member 15 may have two non-stretchable portions, one at each end, mounted on a stiffening member, and the characters, which may be imprinted or drawn thereon at various angles, may be distorted to produce wider, higher, or italic types, by separating the end supporting members. The distoited characters can be cut out and pasted into position on a support with other undistorted letters. The invention may also be applied to the production of advertisements by distorting the lines of characters or the designs upon the medium 15 or if desired the entire page of matter may be distorted to any desired shape for subsequent reproduction.
