Abstract

Anti-knock motor fuels are obtained from middle oils by treating the middle oils at 400--430 DEG C., with hydrogen in presence of hydrogenating catalysts. Separating the products boiling below 100--125 DEG C., from the products obtained, and subjecting the latter to a reforming and dehydrogenating heat treatment under pressure so that an anti-knock product poorer in hydrogen is obtained. Sulphides prepared as described in Specification 379,335 are preferably used as the hydrogenating catalysts. The reforming treatment is carried out at temperatures of 475--560 DEG C., under 70--100 atms. pressure and for a period of 1--10 mins. and the octave number knock rating is raised from 50 to 65. Middle oil produced by the destructive hydrogenation of German brown coal is passed with hydrogen under 200 atms. at 420 DEG C., over a tungsten sulphide catalyst. A product is obtained containing 60 per cent benzines and 40 per cent heavier oils which may be further converted or used as lamp and Diesel oils. The fraction boiling below 125 DEG C., is removed from the benzine which is then passed at 500--520 DEG C., and under 80--100 atms. pressure through an externally heated coil the time of sojourn in the coil being 2--4 minutes. The product obtained is cooled by direct contact with middle oils, (separated from high boiling compounds), condensed, and stripped. The final product has an octave number of 65 and on mixing with the lighter fractions distilled off a benzine having an octave number of 68 is obtained.
