Abstract

439,044. Boot-making machines. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Blanchard, B. B. ; Swampscott, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) May 28, 1934, No. 15798. Convention date, May 31, 1933. [Class 17 (i)] Pulling over.-A step-by-step gripper lasting machine has in addition to the usual support engaging the insole rib to prevent lateral displacement of the work, an auxiliary member arranged to penetrate the insole to support the work during the period of most strain on the rib, and to be withdrawn prior to the feed of the shoe to the next lasting position. As applied to the machine described in Specification 283,978, [Class 17 (i)], wherein the rib support 10 serves to clinch staples driven to secure the upper in lasted position, an auxiliary support 68 has two points 70 and is carried by a slide 66 guided in a member 64, secured to the shoe rest holder 49. The slide 66 is pivoted to a block 80 guided on a stem 82 projecting upwardly from the member 64 the slide being urged downwardly by a spring 84 positioned between the block 80 and a second block 90 secured on the upper end of the stem. The block 80 is normally held raised by a latch 86 engaging the block 90, and freed by a spring blade 98 carried by the slide 22 carrying the staple nozzle described in the prior Specification. The points 70 are thus caused to engage the insole just after the commencement of the forward movement of the slide 22. To retract the points prior to work feed the block 80 has a lug 110 co-operating with a latch 108 on the link 36 on the staple transferring slide described in the prior Specification. As the slide 22 commences its rearward movement and the link 36 its upward movement, the latch 108 at that time being below the lug 110, the block 80 is raised until the latch 86 again engages the block 90, the latch 108 being adjustable so that sufficient lift is given to the lug before retraction of the slide 22 separates the parts. The shoe rest holder 49 is carried by a sleeve 50 rotatable in a fixed sleeve 52 and provided with an arm 56 engaged on one side by a stop screw 58 and on the other side by a spring 62 so that the support may yield to accommodate differing thicknesses of upper material.
