[Class 103 (i)] [See also Group XXXV] In electromagnetic track brake blocks for vehicles, the polepieces or the magnet body are transversely subdivided into sections capable of relative vertical movement to enable the braking surface to accommodate itself to unevennesses in the rail surface with which the block engages. The polepieces may also be subdivided longitudinally. In Fig. 1, the polepiece sections 4, 6 are bolted to' the side members 1 and the intermediate sections 8 are loosely strung upon a wire 7 mounted in the sections 4, 6. A brass strip extending the length of the magnet and screwed to the inner face of the sections 4, 6 prevents the sections from sliding off the wires 7 before attachment to the members 1 and also prevents contact between opposite sections in the assembled magnet. According to Fig. 4, the polepieces as well as being transversely subdivided are also subdivided longitudinally into plates 12, 13, 14 having interengaging hook-like projections as shown, the inner plates being suspended on a longitudinal non-magnetic strip 11. Support of the sections by means of a strip 11 may be adopted when the sections are only subdivided transversely. In a further construction, the whole of the side members 1 with the core parts 2 which extend transversely through the coil 3 are subdivided transversely, the end pairs of sections being secured together by transverse bolts and the intermediate sections being mounted on longitudinal wires or rods similar to the wires 7, which extend through the sections.
