Abstract
Residual catalyst is separated from a cellulose ester, prepared by esterification of cellulose with an organic acid in the presence of an inorganic acid catalyst and a non-solvent for the ester, by adding to the reaction mass, before or after removal of the esterifying liquor, a substance that is soluble in the esterifying liquor or in the non-solvent, and is reactive with the residual catalyst to form an insoluble compound. Suitable substances are alcoholates, phenolates, naphtholates, oleates, stearates, salicylates, and benzoates. In the case of having phosphoric or sulphuric acid as catalyst, the alkaline earth metal or lead salts of such substances may be used. When perchloric acid is the catalyst, a potassium salt is suitable, e.g. potassium alcoholate. In an example, cellulose is pretreated with acetic acid and sulphuric acid and acetylated by means of acetic anhydride in the presence of benzene. Towards the end of the reaction, calcium salicylate is added. In a second example, the acetylation reaction of the first example is completed without addition of the precipitant, the acetylating mixture is removed and replaced by benzene containing barium phenolate.
