Abstract

Cyanine dyes which sensitize gelatino-silver halide emulsions and which are pyrido cyanines having two single heterocyclic nuclei linked by a --CH = group, are prepared by the method disclosed in Specification 408,571, viz. the use of a strong organic base as acid binding agent. In examples, 2-iodopyridine methiodide is condensed with a -picoline methiodide, 2.4-dimethylthiazole ethiodide, 2.4 - dimethylselenazole metho - p - toluenesulphonate, 2.4 - dimethyloxazole metho - p - toluenesulphonate, and 2 - methylthiazoline metho - p - toluenesulphonate in alcohol and in presence of triethylamine. Specifications 369,947; 385,332, [Group XX]; 408,569; and 408,570, [Group XX], also are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 relates to gelatino-silver halide emulsions containing the above dyes and to the manufacture of these dyes by condensing quaternary salts of two compounds having single heterocyclic nuclei (of which at least one is a pyridine nucleus) in presence of a strong organic base as condensing agent. The subject-matter is equivalent to that which is disclosed in the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 in respect of Specification 436,941. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
