Abstract
Dialkyl- and diarylaminoindocarbocyanine dyes sensitize silver halide emulsions to red. They are prepared by treating a quaternary ammonium salt of a 2-methyl-3-dialkylindole substituted by a dialkylamino or a diarylamino group with an ester of an orthocarboxylic acid. In an example 2-methylketol is treated with methyl iodide and the quaternary ammonium salt nitrated; reduction and ethylation gives a 4 - diethylamino - 2 . 3 . 3 - trimethylindole iodide which is heated in pyridine with triethyl orthoformate. The use of esters of higher orthocarboxylic acids results in dyes substituted in the central carbon atom of the trimethine chain. Specification 232,740, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to dyes of the general formula:-- <FORM:0402521/IV/1> wherein R = alkyl, r = alkyl, aryl or acyl, r<1> = alkyl, R = alkyl, aryl or alkoxy and also specifies the employment of esters of orthocarbonic acid in the manufacture of the dyes, but this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
