Abstract

437,139. Absorbing moisture in optical instruments. BARR & STROUD, Ltd., and FRENCH, J. W., Caxton Street, Anniesland, Glasgow. Aug. 7, 1934, No. 22820. [Class 34 (i)] An encased optical instrument is provided with a holder for desiccating substance, such as silica gel or calcium chloride, the holder being adapted to engage with the casing, and a wall of moisture-absorbing and conducting material is interposed between the desiccating substance and the air within the casing. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the casing of one limb of a binocular is provided with desiccating substance 8 such as silica gel, which is confined between a transparent plate 6 and a wall 7 of moistureabsorbing and conducting material such as unglazed porcelain or earthenware, chemical filter paper, or blotting paper. The parts 6 and 7 are clamped between the casing A and the end plate 2. An opening 9 permits observation of the silica gel which contains a moisture-content indicator changing colour in combination with water. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the silica gel is contained in a screwed holder B provided with a window 12. The inner end of the holder is closed by a wall 14 of moisture-absorbing and conducting material forming part of a capsule fitting the holder. A protecting wire gauze 15 may be provided. When the desiccating material is of such a type as calcium chloride, pieces of absorbent material 18, as shown in Fig 4, may be provided within the desiccating material to assist in absorbing surplus moisture. In a further modification the holder for the desiccating material is lined with absorbent material, and in another arrangement the desiccating material is divided by a partition of absorbent material which may be pierced with holes.
