Abstract
436,865. Signs. STAP, W. E. WESTFIELD-, Kenley Cottage, Brighton Road, Purley, Surrey. April 13, 1934, No. 11218. [Class 3 (ii)] Signs, which may be of the luminous electric discharge tube type, are resiliently mounted on aeroplanes in such a way that they are permanently spaced therefrom and do not substantially obstruct the passage of air to the wings &c. Fig. 3 shows in cross-section a neon tube 5 held on to a frame 6 by a clip 8, with a spongy rubber or other pad 9 between the tube and the frame. The frame may be of plywood, with side walls 7, and is of outline shape. Pads are provided also between the clips 8 and the tube 5, and, optionally, between the frame 6 and the surface of the aeroplane. Fig. 4 shows a method of mounting the frames 6 on the plane, bolts 11 passing through plates 9<a> and 12 which are spaced from the wing 2 by packing 10 and the frame 6 respectively. Nosings may be mounted on the wings to accommodate large frames. An alternative form of frame attachment comprises longitudinal strips carried by the wings, and in a further form the tubes 5 &c. are carried by cross springs on a tubular &c. support. The tubes 5 may have reflectors associated therewith, and may be energized by current from a generator driven by an air screw.
