Abstract
436,616. Sewing-machines. ARMSTRONG, J. J. V., 12, Church Street, Liverpool.-(Union Special Machine Co. ; 400, North Franklin Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) Dec. 4, 1934, No. 34787. [Class 112] A sewing-machine of the overhead scale-pan type has its inner and outer feed cups mounted on shafts depending from an overhung portion of the casing, one shaft having a movable support mounted on a shaft oscillating about a horizontal axis and having a spring controlled lever thereon engaging a stop to limit the movement of the feed cups towards each other when there is no fabric between them. The shafts on which the feed cups 7, 10 are mounted are housed within oil-retaining sleeves, the sleeve 11 being secured by a clamp 12 to an arm 14 on a shaft 15. The opposite end of the shaft 15 is keyed to a lever 55, 66, one arm 55 being acted upon by a spring 65 to urge the cups together and the other arm 66 moving between two adjustable eccentrics 75, 71 forming stops. The compression of the spring 65 is adjusted by a screwed sleeve 59 having a lock nut 61. A rod 62 connected to the arm 55 is movable by a treadle to separate the feed cups when required. A recess 56 56<a> in the casing houses these parts to prevent the fabric being sewn from coming into contact with them. The shaft carrying the cup 10 has a universal coupling 16, 17, 18 to a shaft 9 having a gearwheel 20 in mesh with a similar wheel 19 on the shaft of the cup 7. The shaft of the cup 7 is moved by ratchet mechanism moved by links 30, 39 from an eccentric 40 on the main driving shaft 4, the meeting ends of the links 30, 39 being mounted on a pin 32 carried by an arm 35 pivoted on a pin set eccentrically on a plate 43. By turning the plate 43, which is slotted to take a clamping-screw 46, the stroke of the link 30 may be varied to alter the length of the stitch. The looper 51, spreader 53 and needle shaft 49 extend through sleeves 52, 54, 50 mounted tightly in the casing which has an oil well from which oil is splashed by a disc on the main shaft 4.
