Abstract
436,497. Uniting by fusion. GAS ACCUMULATOR CO. (UNITED KINGDOM), Ltd., 77, High Street, Brentford, Middlesex.- (Assignees of Svenska Aktiebolaget Pasaccumulator; Lidingo, near Stockholm) March 25, 1935, Nos. 9210 and 9211. Convention dates, March 27, 1934 and Oct. 15, 1934. [Class 83 (iv)] A device for keeping the edges of a joint to be welded at a constant distance apart during welding despite thermal stresses and comprising a web member passing through the open joint and arranged in connection with blocks disposed above and below the joint, one of the blocks consisting of two or more co-operating parts engaging the two work parts, is so constructed that the co-operating work engaging parts may be adjusted during welding to vary the space between the edges of the work. In welding a cylindrical joint the parts are secured together by clamps A and in front of the welding point C is applied a device B, which comprises a slotted web member 12 passing between the work parts 2, 3, and having a cross-piece 16. Inserted in the slot of the member 12 so as to pivot therein are the curved tongues 10, 11 of a pair of shanks 4, 5 which carry pointed screws 14, 15 for engaging the work so as to vary the spacing. The screws are adjustable to suit work of different thicknesses. The shank 4 has a pair of arms 22 surrounding the shank 5 and connected to a threaded crosspiece 24. The screws are normally out of contact with the work so that the device may be moved along the joint. The spacing and fixing of the edges is effected by a screw 25 engaging the part 26 of the shank 5. The cross-piece 16 has rollers 17, 18 on which the work parts rest, and which are normally pressed apart by a spring 20. The surface of the piece 16 may be concaved in the centre and plane on the edges so that after the points have penetrated into the work they will remain therein at a constant depth. In a modification the shank 5 has ears 30, 31 so that it may be operated in both directions by the screw 25. In a further form, the web member 35 has a T-head 33 provided with one or more fixing screws 39, 40 co-operating with a block 34 which has one or more fixing screws 41 and passes through a slot in the web. The block is grooved at 37 to engage the end of the slot. A lever 44 pivoted to the block 34 at 43 carries a serrated end or roller 42 to adjust the work part 45. The lever 44 is held in adjusted position by a cam surface 49 on the block 34 engaging a second lever 50 pivoted to the lever 44 at 51. Adjustment for work of different thickness is effected by distance pieces 47 which may be of horseshoe shape or provided with clearance holes for the screws 39, 40.
