Abstract
436,032. Separating solid materials. HORSFIELD, W. R., 14, Regent Street, London. Aug. 10, 1934, No. 23202. [Class 117] Vegetable articles such as dried peas, beans, seeds, &c. subject to defects which appear as small surface cavities are sorted by causing the articles to move relatively to spaced needlelike projections formed and disposed to impale the defective articles and separate them by transport from the others. Preferably, the articles are presented to the projections in a thin layer on a supporting surface. In one form of apparatus for carrying the invention into effect, a large number of needle points 13 are mounted on bosses 14 on the inside of a rotating drum and are disposed to point in the direction of rotation of the drum. The articles are fed in a single layer from a hopper 7 by means of a stirring device 12, a rotary feed wheel 9 and shoot 11. The bosses 14 are triangular in shape and arranged in break-joint order so that the articles are directed from the point of one to that of another. The unperforated articles pass through the drum to a collecting shoot 25, while those exhibiting perforations are impaled on the points 13 and are carried upwards in the rotation of the drum until they are swept off into a stationary collecting trough and conveyer 16 by a rotary brush 18. In an alternative construction the points may be mounted on an inclined conveyer band or on the outside of a drum.
