436,000. Indicating ground speed and distance travelled. BRADBROOKE, F. D., 8, Trevanion Road, West Kensington, London. March 29, 1934, No. 9897. [Classes 106 (iii) and 106 (iv)] Apparatus for indicating and calculating the ground speed of aircraft and the distance travelled, or for the evaluation of other analogous quantities, comprises a conical drum chart 11 rotated in accordance with the time taken by the aircraft to move a known distance over the route selected and a cursor 21 moves to intersect the line on the chart corresponding to the distances flown, the position of the transverse line on the cursor indicating on a fixed scale 23 the ground speed in miles per hour. If this speed is maintained the revolution of the chart drum gives an automatic indication of the distance flown, the fractions of miles being read off on the divided scale. The chart lines of progressively increasing helical angles form divisions each representing twenty miles. The lines are hyperbolic spirals when developed flat. A flat chart may be used, and a plurality of interchangeable charts may be used on the same instrument. The supporting disc 10 of the chart projects through the front plate 1, so that it may be rotatably adjusted against the slight friction offered by the clockwork drive 8, which includes a friction clutch 7.
