Abstract

Filaments, threads, fabrics, ribbons, films, and like materials having a basis of a cellulose ester are treated at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure with a saponifying medium comprising a non-metallic nitrogenous base. The temperature may be raised and it may be above the normal boiling point of one of the constituents of the saponifying medium. The cellulose ester may be an acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate, or nitrate, or a mixed ester, or an ether-ester. It may be of high, medium, or low viscosity characteristics. The saponifying medium may be an aqueous or alcoholic or other solution of ammonia, tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide, methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, amylamine, triethylamine, allylamine, trimethylamine, ethylene diamine, methyl or dimethyl ethylene diamine, propylene diamine, piperidine, triamino propane, or diamino hydroxy propane. The temperature may be above or below 100 DEG C., and if desired the saponifying agent may be in the gaseous state. Copper or other metal salts may be present to accelerate the saponification. Swelling agents may be present. The filaments may be treated in hanks or other package form, or while travelling. They may be stretched or allowed to shrink. They may be treated in a closed pressure vessel connected to a pump, or the pressure may be provided by the enclosed vapour of the saponifying medium. The pressure vessel may have small inlets and outlets for passage of the threads, formed in detachable perforated plates. The rollers or guides for leading the threads through the bath may be attached to a frame which can be lifted to facilitate threading up.
