[Class 92 (ii)] Relates to recoil-absorbing devices of the kind described in Specifications 131,040 and 176,337, [both in Class 92 (ii)], comprising one or more convergent-divergent nozzles b, shown in sectional half view in Fig. 1, to increase the kinetic energy of the gases which are diverted rearwardly by one or more deflector surfaces c<2> each generated by the revolution of ar arc round the axis of the gun barrel. Further, part of the gases escapes through ports e<1> and the remainder passes still rearwardly into an expansion tube k round the barrel. According to the present invention, the gases expand still further into a second tube l, Fig. 3, round the barrel from which they return forwardly through an annular gap k<2> between the tubes and strike against the gases already discharged through the rear ports k<1> of the deflector system. The helicoidal motion of the gases initiated by the rifling is continued by helical ribs bl, i, h. The transverse section of the gas passage f is arranged to be substantially constant and the ports el, k<1>. are inclined in the direction of the resultant motion of the gases. A cooling medium is injected into the gases by means of a pipe n<2> leading to a cavity n, the outlet from which is in the form of narrow slits n<3>. Specification 389,469 also is referred to.
