Abstract

435,557. Cables. GROVES, W. W., 30, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.; Frankfort-on-Main, Germany) March 21, 1934, No. 8875. [Class 36] Wires or other longitudinally extended electrical conductors are insulated by winding with sheets or bands of polyvinyl chloride, or polyvinyl chloride which has been further chlorinated, the sheets or bands being free from residues of solvent, and subjecting the wound conductors to a heat treatment sufficient to cause fusing of the overlapping edges of the sheets or bands to form a tight covering. A band, 20 Á, thick, of polyvinyl chloride, having a chlorine content of 62-65 per cent, is dried to free it from volatile solvents and is laid helically on copper wire so that the edges of the band overlap. The wound wire is guided over rollers and passed through a dryer wherein it is heated to 80‹ C. for ten minutes. Two or more windings may be applied to the conductor, the windings being fused together ; pressure may be applied after the heat treatment. Filling materials or softening agents, such as oils, mica, asbestos, silk waste or artificial silk waste, may be added to the polyvinyl chloride.
