Abstract

434,976. Refrigerating. HOOVER, Ltd., Perivale, Middlesex.-(Assignees of Nelson, R. S. ; 1020, Crosby Street, Rockford, Illinois, U.S.A.) May 30, 1934, No. 16182. Convention date, July 17, 1933. [Class 29] Absorption machines and system.-The absorber of a continuous-cycle machine of the pressureequalizing inert gas type consists of three or more sections of which one includes a sinuous pipe while at least two of the others are formed of chambers preferably cylindrical and containing baffles. In one arrangement, in which weak solution is carried by evolved vapour from a generator B up a small-bore pipe B<1> to a separating chamber D from which the vapour passes through a rectifier D<1> to a condenser C, connected to a chamber C<1> having a gas outlet to the inert gas circulation pipe E<1> and a condensate pipe C<2> connected to the evaporator, while the weak solution flows through heat-exchange coils and a pipe G<1> to another gas separating chamber A<8>, the absorber comprises an upper sinuouspipe section A<7> and lower sections or chambers formed by division plates A3, A<4>, Fig. 2, in a cylinder A. The mixed refrigerant vapour and inert gas from the evaporator E pass through the pipe El, which extends through a heat-exchanger F, to the lowest compartment of the middle section of the absorber and thence by way of the duct A<5> to the bottom of the lowest section from which it passes through the pipe A<6> to the bottom of the uppermost or sinuous-pipe section A<7>. From the latter section, the inert gas, deprived of refrigerant vapour, returns through the heatexchanger F and the pipe F<1> to the evaporator. The circulation of the gases through the pipe E<1> is promoted by arranging the vertical limbs of the pipe in heat-exchange with the gas separator D and the condensate pipe C<2>. The weak solution flows in countercurrent to the gases from the chamber A<8> through the sealing tubes A<10>, A<11> to the bottom of the absorber A from which the strong solution returns through the heat-exchanger G to the generator. In another arrangement, the gases pass from the lowest section of the absorber to the highest via a duct A<6>, Fig. 4, passing through the centre section, and the cylinder forming the two lower sections is cooled by the vaporization of a liquid in a jacket J connected to air-cooled condenser coils J<2>, J<4>. In a further arrangement, the sinuous-pipe section of the absorber extends laterally from a compartment formed at the top of the cylinder. Specification 389,674 is referred to.
