Abstract

434,829. Driving external machines from motor vehicles; vehicle stands. WARREN, E. CORBOULD-, Quarley Down, West Cholderton, Hampshire. Dec. 12, 1934, No. 9856. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] An appliance for driving external machines comprises rollers 7, 8 carried by a frame and spaced apart so that the rear wheel or wheels of a motor vehicle may rest thereon so as to drive the rollers, a supplementary shaft 24, means on said shaft adapted to be brought into frictional driving engagement with one of the rollers, means for holding said frictional means disengaged when the drive is to be temporarily disconnected, and means for conveying the drive from the supplementary shaft to the required machine. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the shaft 24 is mounted in a bearing on a lever 17 pivoted at its lower end to a side plate 1 and controlled at its upper end by a spring 21 which tends to force a roller 25 on the shaft against the roller 7 so as to drive the shaft. The shaft drives a machine through a coupling and a flexible shaft. When the drive is to be disconnected the roller 25 is moved away from roller 7 by means of an arm 18 pivoted to the lever and formed with a notch 19 adapted to engage a fixed pin 20 to hold the roller 25 in the disengaged position. In a modification the shaft 24 carries a belt pulley and a belt passes over this pulley and a pulley fixed to the roller 7, the'spring 21 acting so as to move the shaft 24 away from the roller 7 so as to tighten the belt and transmit the drive. Belt pulleys 14 for driving other machines, and an emery wheel 15 are provided on the roller shafts 11, 12. The appliance may comprise rollers 7, 8 for one wheel only, or, as shown, additional rollers 9, 10 may be provided for the other wheel. The rollers are fixed on shafts 11, 12 mounted in bearings in plates 1 .. 4 which are connected together by plates 5, 6. To prevent lateral movement of the road wheels when they are on the rollers, guide rollers 28 are mounted on arms 27 pivoted to the plates 1, 4 so that they can be folded down between the plates when not in use. The appliance may be sunk in the ground so that the car wheels can be driven thereon, or the appliance may rest on the ground and be provided with a ramp or ramps 30 hooked or hinged thereto. When the car wheels are being driven on to or off the rollers the latter may be locked in any suitable manner.
