[Class 104 (ii)] In an overhead railway, such as that described in Specification 191,760, [Class 104 (ii)], in which a car is suspended from a rigid track and is guided by a rigid track below the car, a switching apparatus is arranged in a gap between fixed portion A, B of the track, whereby a car may run straight through on the track A, B or be switched on to one or more branch tracks C. The switch rails D, E are carried by a traverser girder frame 8, 10, 11 mounted on wheels 14 running on transverse rails 6 and guided by horizontal wheels 15 engaging rails 16 on the traverser. In one position of the traverser, the rail D connects the rails A, B, in another position the rail E connects the rails A and C. When the rails are aligned, a locking member 27 normally housed in a slot in the web 28 of the fixed rails A, B or C is moved by a compressed air motor 25 into a slot 29 in the traverser rail to lock the fixed and traverser rails against horizontal or vertical movement. At the same time switches V<1>, V<2>, V<3> are closed to operate signals, and a switch W controlling the traverser-actuating motor is opened to prevent the traverser being moved when the rails are locked together. The valves controlling the supply of air to the motors 25 are operated by solenoids which are energized when the traverser rails come into alignment with the fixed rails.
