[Class 130] To prevent loose fragments of tobacco from escaping from the ends of cigarettes, the ends of the cigarettes are wetted superficially, during manufacture, by an adhesive liquid. The liquid may be applied by a band cutter used for severing the cigarettes from a continuous rod. In the arrangement shown, a pad 8 for applying the liquid to a band cutter is connected through a valved pipe 6 to a liquid container 2 fitted with a weighted piston 3. The surface of the band cutter may be slightly roughened by etching or grinding.
