[Class 27] In prepayment mechanism for gas meters the quantity mechanism of which may be set forward by either of two coins of different value proportionately to the value of the coin used, a back rotation stop device is provided between the coin mechanism and the quantity mechanism. One sun-wheel of the quantity mechanism has attached to it a wheel M, Figs. 1 and 4, driven through a wheel 41 from a wheel 12 actuated by the coin mechanism. The wheel 41 is rigid with a ratchet wheel 44, and the spindle 42 of the unit 41, 44 is rotatable in slots 45. During prepayment the wheels 12, M rotate in the direction of the arrows, Fig. 4. If a reactive rotation of the wheel M occurs such as would drive the wheel 12 in the opposite direction, the unit 41, 44 is moved down in the slots 45 and the wheel 44 engages a fixed tooth 43 which locks it and prevents the back rotation. The wheel 12 is loose on a shaft 8 and carries a planet wheel unit 13, 14, the wheel 13 meshing with a sun-wheel 17 fixed to the shaft 8 and the wheel 14 meshing with a wheel 15 carried by an arm secured to the wheel 12 and meshing with a sun-wheel 16 loose on the shaft 8. When a penny is inserted, the wheel 16 is locked and the wheel 17 is rotated, the wheel 17 being locked and the wheel 16 rotated when a shilling is used. The wheel 12 is thus rotated proportionately to the value of the coin used. Coin action, mechanical - connection and multiple-coin.-The coins are inserted into slots 50, 51, Fig. 1, in a shaft 1 which is rotated through 180 degrees and returned by a spring. A spring controlled pivoted clamp coacts with a disc 2 on the shaft to ensure a full stroke in each direction, the position of the clamp being reversed at the end of each movement by abutments 4, 5 on the disc 2. The shaft 1 is geared through wheels 6, 6<1>, 7, 7<1> to a wheel 9 loose on the shaft 8 but secured to a double-armed lever 32, the arms of which are located one on each side of the wheel 9. The arms have pivoted to them, levers 34, 35 for engagement respectively by a shilling and a penny. When either of the levers 34, 35 is actuated, a catch 36 thereon engages either a pin 29 or a pin 31 on levers 22, 23 loose on the shaft and carrying ratchets 27, 28 respectively to engage discs 19, 21 secured respectively to the wheel 16 and the shaft 8. In this way, the levers 22, 23 are carried along with the double-armed lever 32 and set forward the quantity-mechanism. A bar 25 adjustable by a pointer 26 forms a stop for releasing the ratchets 27, 28 from the discs 19, 21.
