Abstract

432,742. Filters. ELLIOT, N. G., Mount Green, Halifax Road, Littleborough, Lancashire. Feb. 14, 1935, No. 7233/34. [Class 46] Apparatus for cleaning sand filters comprises a separating member to be lowered into the sand in situ to separate a portion from the remainder, and means on the separating member to cause a flow of water through the separated portion of the sand comprising jets which remain above the surface of the sand and direct streams of water downwardly on to the sand with sufficient force to disturb and wash the sand to a predetermined depth. The separating member may be open at top and bottom and may consist of an annular partition 1 provided with a platform 2 having a central aperture 3 surrounded by a wall 4. A central pipe 6 is connected by a valve 7 and nozzle 8 to a flexible hose 9. The nozzle 8 has an outlet valve 10. A ball bearing 12 supported by the pipe 6 carries a spindle 13 provided with an adjusting nut 17 and ending in a hollow cone 14 provided with apertures 15 and surrounded by a bush 16. Connected with the hollow cone 14 are tubes 19 provided with drag prongs 22 and with jet branches 20. The partition 1 has an annular external flange 23 and a compartment 24 provided with a fly valve 26 operated by a rod 27. An outlet 29 is connected by a nozzle 30 to a flexible hose 31 leading to a discharge pipe below the level of the water in the filter. The separating member is floated into position and then partly filled with water through the valve 10 until the flange 23 engages the surface of the sand. Water to agitate and clear the enclosed sand is then passed under pressure through the pipe 6, tube 19, and the jets, afterwards passing upwards into the separating chamber and out through the open top of the compartment 24 and the hose 31. The reaction causes the tube 19 and spindle 13 to rotate at a speed which is kept low by the action of the drag prongs 22. When the chamber is to be floated to another position the water in it is discharged through the valve 26. To cover the whole area of the filter, the apparatus is operated in overlapping positions, a floating sectional plank and a clamping jack being provided to facilitate correct positioning. The plank is provided with lateral projections to act as positioning stops.
