Abstract
Polymerization products of much higher molecular weight and of greater viscosity are obtained when polymerizing isobutylene by means of boron fluoride according to the process of Specification 401,297 if specially pure isobutylene obtained by converting isobutyl or tertiary butyl alcohols and subsequent purification by distillation is employed. The low temperatures defined in the first Specification are no longer necessary, as ordinary room temperature or temperatures even as high as 100 DEG C. may be employed. In an example, isobutylene obtained by leading isobutyl alcohol over aluminium oxide at 400 DEG C. and subsequent distillation at 2 or 3 atmospheres in a column 5 metres in height, is cooled to -15 DEG C. and boron fluoride led in. An oil having a viscosity of 250 DEG Engler at 100 DEG C. is obtained. If the polymerization is carried out at -80 DEG C., a product is obtained having a molecular weight of 40,000, whereas if undistilled isobutylene is treated under the same conditions a product of 10,000 to 15,000 molecular weight is obtained. The Provisional Specification states that mixtures containing isobutylene may be employed and includes examples in which a cracking gas containing 25 per cent of isobuty lene is polymerized to give (1) a viscous oil having a viscosity of 4,5 DEG Engler at 100 DEG C., and (2) a solid product of molecular weight 12,000.
