Abstract

432,035. Lubricating journal bearings. CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd., Arc Works, and MAJOR, C. W., 104, Vicarage Road, both in Chelmsford. Jan. 18, 1934, No. 1813. [Class 12 (ii)] A shaft bearing comprises a bearing element and a housing which surrounds the shaft to provide an oil-well in any position of the shaft, is furnished with a duct or ducts to provide for return of used oil to the oil-well, and at its portion that is normally uppermost when the shaft is horizontal is provided with a member having a continuously open filling conduit leading from the exterior of the housing to the interior of the oil-well and projecting inwardly into the space forming the oil-well for such a distance that however much the bearing is tilted the interior end of the conduit is not submerged by the oil in the oil-well so that oil cannot escape through the conduit. The shaft 12, Fig. 1, runs in a bush 11 which is mounted in inwardly projecting tubular portions 14 of a housing 13, the lower part of which constitutes an oil-well 18. The shaft is lubricated by an oil ring running in a channel 20 in the bush 11 or by a wick. Used oil leaking along the shaft is trapped in spaces 24 constituted by rings 24a and is returned to the oil-well 18 through return ducts 23 in each of the tubular bosses 14. An overflow duct 22 is provided in one of the bosses 14. A boss 25 projects into the housing 13 and has a filling conduit 26. In a modification, Fig. 6, the bush 31 is mounted in a bracket portion 34 of the housing 33, the outer end of which is closed by an end plate 36.
