Abstract
431,551. Stabilizing devices for aircraft, projectiles, &c. FABRY, J., 218, Rue de Rivoli, Paris. Dec. 3, 1934, No. 34735. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1933. [Class 4] [See also Group XXI] In aircraft, torpedoes, bombs, &c. having radial stabilizing fins, the forward and upper edges of the fins are arranged to provide a reaction which automatically damps oscillations of small amplitude and corrects small deviations from the direction the aircraft &c. is required to maintain. As shown in Fig. 1 the stabilizing fins A, of a body B moving in a fluid, have thickened edges 1 .. 4 to provide stabilizing and damping surfaces. The surfaces 1-2, 2-3, impose a resistance to the passage of the body through the fluid and maintains the centre of pressure on the axis of the body. In Fig. 6 the tail of the body is shown displaced and indicates how the surface 3, 4 is acted on by fluid pressure as well as the surfaces 1-2, 2-3. The fins or fin supports of the body may be pierced with holes and may be provided with ribs and bosses.
