Abstract

430,593. Looms. SHIMWELL, O., Gawsworth Old Hall, Gawsworth, Cheshire. Feb. 23, 1934, Nos. 5953, 17613, and 26558. [Classes 142 (i), 142 (ii), and 142 (iii)] Beat-up motions; lays; reeds; shuttleguards ; shuttle-races ; shuttle-boxes ; shuttles.- The reed a, Fig. 1, takes no part in the beating- up of the weft which is effected by a comb h that rises adjacent to the reed or a comb-like track c carried by the lay and moves the weft to the beat-up position. The comb h enters the warps, as shown in Fig. 4, when the upper warps have been lowered to the level of the lower ones. During the beat-up, certain warps are raised to form the sheet, and before its completion, the shuttle begins to be picked. The shuttle is guided by fingers g on the lay engaging a projection d<1>, Fig. 2, of hard-wood on the shuttle and by the track c engaging a strip d2 of hard wood on the shuttle, space being left beneath the shuttle for the passage of the comb h. In some cases, the track is omitted and the shuttle is guided by two sets of fingers on the lay engaging two projections on the shuttle. The lay and shuttle boxes are stationary or the reed may be given a small movement in the direction of the beat up to move any broken threads into position to be engaged by the beat-up comb. To prevent the warp threads from passing continually through the same spaces in the comb-like track c and in the comb h, the reed is reciprocated lengthwise relatively to the track, while the comb h is also given a weft-wise movement. The shuttleboxes have each a pivoted side normally held closed by a locking-rod connected to a treadle. In depressing the treadle, the shuttle-box side is unlocked, while a further rod connected to a lever arm on the pivot of the shuttle-box side and to the treadle causes the side to be moved outwardly to release the shuttle. Shedding-motions.-The swell is connected by clutch-release gearing to the shredding tappets so that, if a shuttle is not boxed properly, the shedding is stopped, Figs. 28 and 29 (not shown). Selvages, forming and protecting.-To prevent distortion of the selvages by the withdrawal of the beating-up comb h, Fig. 23, the carrier of the comb has a projection 31 adapted to engage an arm 32 carrying a needle 26 and raise it free from the warps at beat up, while when the comb is lowered, the needle enters the warp at the edge of the fabric. Warps, tensioning.-The upper warps are kept slacker than the lower ones by arranging a fixed warp-tension bar i, Fig. 25 (not shown), above the plane of the fabric.
