[Class 87 (ii)] Treads are formed on rubber tyres, or worn treads are remoulded by applying heat to the tyre through a matrix during a relative rolling motion between the tyre and the matrix. The matrix may comprise a concave or cylindrical profiled roller 13 of comparatively small radial thickness, mounted on a body 2 of large heat capacity, which is pivoted in a yoke 14 carried by a handle 10 through which leads 11 conduct electricity to a heater 6 mounted within the body 2, a thermostat 5 (operating by making or breaking the circuit) being provided within the heater. One arm of the yoke is pivoted at 9 and clamped, when adjusted by a nut 8, so that rollers bearing differing tread profiles may be readily exchanged. According to one modification, heated profiled car tracks may be laid down, the car being slowly moved over the tracks thereby forming the treads on all wheels simultaneously. According to another modification, a car may be manoeuvred by ramps 26, Fig. 4, so that one wheel is supported on rollers 18, 19, the latter of which is slowly driven by a motor 21 operating through reduction gearing 22. A heated profiled roller 13 carried by arms 14 is moved by screw gear 17 into contact with the tyre, during the rotation of the latter. A funnel connected to an exhaust fan or other source of partial vacuum may be provided to withdraw fumes produced by the burning of the rubber. With the use of a plurality of such apparatus the individual tyres may be treated simultaneously. When the roller 13 is inoperative, the motor being provided with a revolution indicator, the apparatus may be employed to test the brakes on the car.
